The Antietam Battlefield is located just 15 minutes from downtown Hagerstown and is preserved in time with many historical monuments and an educational Visitor’s Center. During The Battle of Antietam there were over 23,000 casualties as the North and South fought over the small territory in Sharpsburg, MD. Many historians feel this battle was the turning point in the Civil War. If you like U. S. History, the Park Rangers at the Antietam Battlefield can tell the story as if you were there that day. You’ll want to be sure to visit Antietam and see the infamous, Bloody Lane, Burnside Bridge and the Dunker Church.
The City of Hagerstown is the County Seat and home to the University of Maryland System which includes satellite campuses for Frostburg State University and the University of Maryland. Both offer advanced degrees and programs in Nursing and Business, including Cyber Security. The University of Maryland Medical School is also located in Hagerstown offering state of the art medical training and education. The Medical School is located on the Meritus Health Campus next to the Hagerstown Junior College.
Within the City limits on the North End lie many beautiful older homes in the Oak Hill Historic District, where you’ll find a sampling of architecture including Georgian Colonial, Greek Revival and Spanish style homes. The City is full of U.S. History where at one point, the City was held ransom during the Civil War!
On the South End is the Hagerstown City Park and Art Museum. The City Park has beautiful swans that grace the pond and bandshell for concerts in the park. The South End has older, beautiful homes in the Prospect Historic District.
Like sports? Then you will surely want to catch a game at the new Stadium which is home to the Hagerstown Flying Box Cars! The “Box Car” was a plane built during WWII at the Fairchild Plant in Hagerstown. The Municipal Stadium was constructed in 2024 and offers family fun at an affordable price complete with a fireworks display after many home games. There is also a Hagerstown Field House where volleyball courts and indoor soccer tournaments are held throughout the year.
Like to eat? Then you’ll enjoy the many fine restaurants located in Hagerstown where you’ll find a sampling of cuisine; Thai, Cuban, Mexican, and seafood. Nick’s Airport Inn is a favorite for special occasions offering fine dining near the Municipal Airport. August Oktoberfest is a fun downtown event for good music, food and beer!
The Municipal Airport in Hagerstown is where you can catch a quick flight to Orlando, FL, Myrtle Beach, FL or Washington, D.C. And, you might even see the President of the United States flying in on Air Force One! The Municipal airport is home to many aviation companies and has hangers that house small planes, as well.
